The Woodland Guidance Department will be hosting this informational night focusing on post-secondary school planning for all WRHS juniors and their parents. Students and parents will meet with their respective school counselors at the beginning of the evening to receive an overview of the Navigational Guide, an introduction to the career and college planning process, and be given a copy of their student’s transcript. At 7:30, the first of two break-out sessions will begin. This first session will run until 8:15 pm. Students and parents will choose which workshop they would like to attend from the following list:
The College Search Process: A hands-on workshop in the computer lab to explore College Board services and the MyRoad career and college search website.
Opportunities in the Military: Learn what it means to give military service, what qualifications are needed to get in, and what educational opportunities are available.
The College Athlete: Interested in playing college level athletics? Learn about NCAA rules and regulations, and some of the ins & outs of what is required of a college athlete.
Financial Aid: A representative from the Connecticut Student Loan Foundation will provide general financial aid information and address your questions.
Preparing for the World of Work: Learn resume styles and tips for post high school graduates seeking entry level jobs. Find out where to look for jobs, what to avoid and how to present yourself when you have little or no job experience.
Two Year College Opportunities: Learn about the differences between certificate and degree programs offered at community colleges, as well as the articulation process with four year colleges.
Workplace Success: All aspects of business etiquette including dressing for success, interpersonal skills, networking and general corporate protocol will be addressed.
A Panel of 4 Year College Experts: Find out how to utilize the college search process and campus visit to find the perfect match for you. Hear what is needed to write a college essay which “wows” the college admissions reader and learn how college admissions officers review an application.
Each workshop will be offered a second time, from 8:20-9 pm, allowing students and parents to attend another presentation. Out of the Woods, are you ready or not?
