Last year, Poland native MariAnna Majewska moved to Connecticut.
The 14 year old freshman loves rollerblading, gymnastics, sketching, computers, and keeping in touch with her friends in Poland via e-mail.
In Poland, Majewska took English as a foreign language, just as we take Spanish, French, or Italian. She is able to carry conversations and interact with Tina Snow, former Spanish teacher at Woodland. Snow reads and stays with Majewska during the school day.
“I only know a little bit [of English]”, said modest Majewska.
Every day, Majewska works on reading a short story with Snow. When she has completed her reading, her reward is rollerblading for five minutes in the school courtyard.
Majewska is no stranger to rollerblading. Winning 1st in her age division in Poland, she misses her rollerblading team.
Even though there is no rollerblading team in the area, she is looking into joining the gymnastics team at Woodland.
Even though Majewska does not mind being in America, she greatly misses Poland. However, her homesickness will be gone early next year.
“I’m going back [to Poland] in January or February. I just want to finish this year.”
