Colleges want students who challenge themselves. The top competitive colleges only want the students who take the highest level classes offered during high school. At Woodland, the highest level classes are Advanced Placement, often referred to as AP.
During the college application process, the student who takes two advanced placement courses verses the student who excels at honors classes, will determine who gets in.
Students who want to attend competitive school will have a much better chance, and maybe the only one, if they take AP classes.
AP classes offer the three credits potential credits all in one class: one credit for high school graduation, and two credits towards college.
AP courses are offered by College Board, an organization who encourages students to attend college, and offers ways, such as these AP courses, to get there.
College Board offers 37 courses, seven of which are offered at Woodland Regional High School.
Theoretically, a student could take five AP classes during their junior and senior years of high school, and already have enough credits to skip their entire freshman year in college. This would save an immense amount of time and money spent during the college years.
AP classes can also help jumpstart a student’s college career. If they have an idea of the path they wish to take in college, these AP courses can be very helpful. If they are interested in music, an AP course in the Fine Arts will give them a step up in college.
AP courses are nothing but help for students who are serious about college. The only thing students need to know is that AP classes are not easy. It will take many hours of work and dedication. However, it will all be worth it in the end when you have a step up above everyone else in college.
