Spirit Week at Woodland Regional High School invokes images of streamers in the hallways, painted faces, hand-decorated t-shirts and lots of gold glitter. Hair ribbons and colored beads festooned several of the Woodland faithful as they waited not-so patiently for the pep rally that would award the class with the most spirit the coveted Spirit Shovel.
The pep rally brought out the competitive nature of the classes, each trying to outdo the others for amount of students dressed in spirit garb. Black and gold dominated as the color selection and students found several ways to adorn themselves in various states of dress from athletic spirit shirts to Woodland hoodies to plain black tees and sweatshirts; faces were covered in paint--some gold, some black, some black and gold--making wearers unrecognizable save for the fact that they were definitely Woodland fans.
The pep rally signals the end of Spirit Week, culminating with the awarding of the Spirit Shovel to the class that scored the most spirit points. Last year proved a close contest which left several current seniors still disgruntled about their loss last year. Now as seniors, the Class of '09 is looking for vindication. And just another reason to scream "Class of 0-9" at the top of their lungs. But the Class of '10 is looking to notch the first spirit upset ever.
