Everything seems to be working fine; leave it as is.

In the Word from the Woods, we'll take a look at what's happening around some of the Woodland spring sports every week. This week, we feature the Golf, Track and Field, and Boys' Tennis squads.

Golf

The Hawks linksters once again finished the week with a 1-2 performance, splitting a match with St. Paul and Plainville last Thursday before losing to Watertown on Tuesday. Woodland defeated St. Paul, 182-184, but lost to Plainville, 170-182, last Thursday at Tunxis Plantation. The Black and Gold were led by senior Ryan Keaveney (41), senior Kyle Menta (43), sophomore Nick Vanerie (44), and sophomore Anthony Memoli (54). The Hawks also suffered a loss to Watertown on Tuesday at Crestwood Park. Keaveney once again led Woodland with a 41, while Memoli carded a 44, Vanerie shot a 47, and Menta and senior Jon Bock both posted 50's. The golfers are now 4-5.

Track and Field

The Woodland girls’ track and field team went winless in last Wednesday’s dual meet against Torrington and Wolcott in Beacon Falls. The Hawks were handled by the Red Raiders, 108-42, and managed a tie with the Eagles, 75-75. Woodland captured three events on the day. The 4-by-800 meter relay team, consisting of juniors Brittany Albright and Brittany Battis, sophomore Crystal Steinfeld, and freshman Melissa Kiley, won with a time of 10 minutes, 33 seconds. Junior Alyssa Marti won the 100-meter hurdles in 17.73 seconds and Albright took the 800-meters in 2:34. The girls dropped to 5-1-1 on the year.

Boys’ Tennis

Woodland’s boys’ tennis squad won two of three matches last week to improve its season record to 5-6. Last Wednesday, the Hawks easily defeated Wilby, 8-1. Singles winners included seniors Joe Rosa and Jon Trapp, juniors Pat Bradley and Ahmed Galal, and sophomore Mike Krakowski. The doubles teams of Bradley and junior Stew Wilson, Galal and senior James Decarolis, and Wilson and sophomore Mike Castro also won on the day. The Black and Gold also handled Watertown, 7-2, on Saturday. Once again, the Hawks enjoyed a perfect day on the singles court but went just 1-for-3 in doubles. On Monday, Woodland was hammered by undefeated Wolcott, 8-1. The lone win for the Hawks came from the doubles team of Wilson and senior Kris Rustic.
