Poll: Holidays
Everything seems to be working fine; leave it as is.
No favorites--take out any holidays that have to do with religious beliefs.
Depending on school population, certain holidays should be added to the calendar.
Be fair--add all major religious holidays to the calendar.
Who cares--More holidays would be great!

In the Word from the Woods, we'll take a look at what's happening around some of the Woodland spring sports every week. This week, we feature the Boys' Tennis, Track and Field, Softball, and Golf teams.

Boys’ Tennis

The Woodland boys’ tennis team split its two matches of the week, taking down Kennedy before narrowly losing to Sacred Heart. On Monday, the Hawks beat Kennedy, 6-3, at Chase Park, to even up its record at 8-8. Woodland’s top three singles players, senior Joe Rosa, sophomore Mike Krakowski, and senior Jon Trapp all continued to play well, winning both of their matches. Senior singles player James DeCarolis and the teams of Rosa/Trapp and senior Kris Rustic and junior Stew Wilson each won doubles against Kennedy, while Krakowski and Trapp won the only doubles match against Sacred Heart. The Hawks are 8-9.

Track and Field

The boys finished third in Saturday’s Crusader Relays, winning in the 4-by-400-meter relay (Chris Savvidou, Tyler Murphy, Eric Dietz, Josh Fitzpatrick), sprint medley (John Plaskon, Dan Park, Brandon Fowler, and Murphy) and team triple jump (Dan Park, Josh Fitzpatrick, and Tyler Slapikas). The girls finished fifth at the Relays. Both teams easily defeated Platt Tech at Woodland on Tuesday, 108-41 each. The Hawks won nearly all of the events on the day in a tune-up meet before Tuesday’s NVL Championships, which will be held at Woodland.

Softball

The Hawks continued very solid second-half play, sweeping another week’s worth of games. Last Thursday, Woodland notched a 7-1 win over Ansonia. Junior Aubrey Roulanaitis had a two-run homer while sophomore Lindsay Boland and senior Kelley Mollor both had two hits and junior Katie Alfiere tossed a three-hitter. Mollor led the Hawks to a 12-0 win on Senior Day over Kennedy on Monday, pitching a one-hitter with 12 strikeouts. Senior Alicia Hagan had two hits and an RBI while senior Ashley Bedard had a 2-run double. Woodland also beat Sacred Heart, 12-0, on Tuesday, behind a two-hit, 16 strikeout performance by Alfiere. Junior Kaiti Lembo had four hits and four RBI for Woodland. The Hawks are 15-4.

Golf

Woodland’s golfers split two matches on the week, defeating Kennedy, 175-244, last Thursday, before losing to Northwestern, 168-191, on Tuesday. Leaders of the Kennedy match included senior Ryan Keaveney (42; medalist), sophomore Anthony Memoli (44), senior Kyle Menta (44), and junior Marissa Noto (45). At Northwestern, senior Chris Wright led the Hawks with a 47, while Menta, Memoli, and sophomore Kyle Masoli all carded 48’s. The Hawks are 8-7.
