Keaveney on Course for All-NVL
Woodland senior Ryan Keaveney has consistently been the Hawks’ lowest-shooting golfer throughout the season. Along with fellow senior Kyle Menta, Keaveney helped lead the Hawks to an 8-7 record, an improvement over last year’s mark. Woodland finished in the top six in the league, allowing the team to send a full five-man team to June 3’s NVL championships, as opposed to the two it sent last year as a result of finishing in the league’s bottom five.
Keaveney’s best scores this season include a 38 at East Mountain in Waterbury on May 11 against Crosby, a 39 at Hop Brook in Naugatuck on April 23 against Naugy, and a 40 at Pomperaug in Southbury on April 2 against Kennedy. Keaveney has been the medalist in 11 of 15 matches this season. In order to be selected to the All-Naugatuck Valley League golf squad, Keaveney will need to place in the top six at the league championship on June 3 at Timberlin Golf Course in Kensington. Keaveney is on a solid track toward the All-NVL team, as his scores have been among the league’s top five throughout the season.
“I don’t try to play the guys I’m playing against," Keaveney said. "I just try to play the course. I’ve wanted to medal in every match, and I’ve done pretty well with that. I’ve improved since last year, especially in my short game, but I have to learn after a bad shot to just forget about it and move on. As a team, we’ve definitely improved since last year. This year, we’re sending our whole team to NVL’s, which is a good accomplishment. We’re going to be a surprise over the next few years with our young team. I just try to make sure everything’s going to plan, help coach [Ross Cooper] out, and help the younger guys know what they’re doing….At NVL’s, I want to try to shoot in the high 70’s. It will be my last round as a senior, and I want to go out with a good round. I think I have a good shot at All-NVL.”
