In the Word from the Woods, we'll take a look at what's happening around some of the Woodland spring sports every week. This week, we feature the Softball, Boys' and Girls' Tennis, and Golf teams. Boys’ Tennis Woodland earned a split on the week, going 2-2. The Hawks handled Crosby last Wednesday, 7-2, before falling 6-3 to both Holy Cross and Torrington on Friday and Monday. The Black and Gold rebounded on Tuesday to beat Wilby, 5-1. Seniors Joe Rosa and Jon Trapp both went 4-0 on the week, while sophomore Mike Krakowski went 3-1 and junior Pat Bradley went 2-2. The Hawks are 7-8. Girls’ Tennis The defending NVL champions had a solid 3-1 week to push its record to 12-4 overall and a Copper Division-leading 6-1 mark. The Hawks narrowly lost to Wolcott last Wednesday, 4-3, before reeling off three-straight wins against Holy Cross (7-0), Torrington (6-1), and Watertown (6-1). Junior Stephanie Badale remained perfect on the season, easily winning all four of her matches. Sophomores Megan Wester and Lauren Tremaglio also went undefeated. The doubles team of juniors Sam Angeloszek and Erika Barnett posted a 3-1 mark on the week. Golf The Woodland golfers won both of its matches last week, defeating both Ansonia/Derby Co-op last Thursday and Crosby on Monday. The Hawks easily outshot the Ansonia/Derby squad, taking a 177-208 victory at Hop Brook Golf Course in Naugatuck. Woodland proceeded to easily beat Crosby, 173-188, at East Mountain in Waterbury. Senior Ryan Keaveney continued to have an outstanding season, medaling with a 38 at East Mountain. Senior Kyle Menta followed him with a 43, while sophomores Anthony Memoli and Nick Veneri both carded 46’s. The Hawks are 5-6 on the year. |
